Have they mentioned any suspicions as to the source of them? It doesn't feel like anything I'm familiar with, but they are also not very old, which makes me rather suspicious as to the intent. They are not what you might call naturally-occurring elements.
The only use they would have is a kamikaze one. If you intend to harness their energy for yourself, that is.
