Natsume Yuujinchou is a series dealing with youkai, Japanese folklore, spirits, kami, and the intermingling of humans with them. Specifically, the Matoba are a clan of exorcists, raised for generations with strong spiritual senses and knowledge of creatures and techniques dealing with spirits.

Generally, in-series, humans with spiritual power are referred to as "able to see". Either "youkai" or "ayakashi" are specifically used to refer to Japanese folklore spirits in the series, though "ayakashi" is more common and I'll be leaning towards using that. Spirits bound to the service of an exorcist are referred to as "shiki".

As Matoba has a strong spiritual ability and the ability to sense the abnormal (and is also the manipulative sort of character to prey upon this), please let me know if there is anything I should know about your character and anything you'd like to opt in/out of regarding the following:

Is your character any manner of spirit, youkai, demon, or otherwise inhuman being? Does your character share their body with any manner of spirit, youkai, demon, Persona, etc?

If your character is human, is your character capable themselves of sensing spiritual energy, youkai, demons, etc? Further, do they have harnessable spiritual powers?

Does your character carry any manner of object or artifact that might ping as being related to spirits, demons, the underworld, etc?

Are you okay with Matoba sensing your character's inhumanness/their ability to see/their magical or spiritual artifact?

Are you okay with Matoba testing your character's inhumanness/their ability to see in minor ways (such as asking intrusive questions, summoning his youkai servants, or chanting a spell that might have physical effects *not* on your character such as surroundings)?

Is your character any manner of spirit, youkai, demon, or otherwise inhuman being? Does your character share their body with any manner of spirit, youkai, demon, Persona, etc? No.... and maybe. Flat is essentially a human being in most shapes, ways, and forms. But he houses something that is definitely inhuman in nature. This something is both a separate enough from him that it manifests when Flat dies, but close enough that it can slip in mid-sentence and leave just as quickly. The best way to deacribe it would be like a shadow, or maybe a software that runs in the background.

If your character is human, is your character capable themselves of sensing spiritual energy, youkai, demons, etc? Further, do they have harnessable spiritual powers? Yes, Flat perception abilities are comparable to those of a Servant. In other words, he can sense others from a far away distance, their energies, and what they are, too. This sight seems to extend all the way to some form of clairvoyance, or something that manfiests similarly. He can also control mana, which isn’t exactly spiritual energy but.... it sure is energy. And he does it very, very well, while also having a seemingly inexhaustible amount of mana as well.

Does your character carry any manner of object or artifact that might ping as being related to spirits, demons, the underworld, etc? No.

Are you okay with Matoba sensing your character's inhumanness/their ability to see/their magical or spiritual artifact? Flat’s rather capable at masking/hiding his mana, to the point that he can pass as a regular human/very weak mage even under the scrutny of multiple magical layers. There will be times when the other half will rear its head for a blip—that can definitely be sensed as something that’s... off. Imagine dipping into the Uncanny Valley for a second, or something like that.

Are you okay with Matoba testing your character's inhumanness/their ability to see in minor ways (such as asking intrusive questions, summoning his youkai servants, or chanting a spell that might have physical effects *not* on your character such as surroundings)? Absolutely! But it will have some negative consequences for Matoba if he pushes too far and either heavily injures Flat or kills him. And by some I mean that Matoba will most likely die.
